Chapter Two tells the story of Captain Walter Fountain, an Ohio regimental adjutant in the Union Army encamped at Pittsburg Landing. Private Luther Dade, a lone, lonely rifleman from Mississippi, frightened but determined, anchors Chapter Three. The publication of __Shiloh__ led both to William Faulkner contacting Mr. Foote to have the latter become a tour guide at the Shiloh battlefield for the former and eventually to the research for and writing of the Civil War trilogy that put Mr. Foote on the map. Asked by Mr. Bennett Cerf of __The New Yorker__ to write "a short, comprehensive history of the Civil War" to commemorate the hundredth anniversary thereof, the third and final volume of his masterwork, __The Civil War: a narrative__, was finally published in 1974.
