Cover margins, page block edges, and endpapers are darkened; front cover has small faint dampstains at its top margin, and book's pages are slightly rippled but not stained at their top margins. Binding is square and tight; pages are bright and unmarked. Book commemmorates the unveiling of a memorial to McGuffey. Book is of the same size as, and front cover resembles that of, a McGuffey's New Third Eclectic Reader, except that cover reads at top "Federation of McGuffey Societies Memorial Meeting, Oxford, Ohio, June 14-15, 1941." Reports and photos relating to the memorial unveiling are interleaved with a selection of pages from the New Third Eclectic Reader. The Federation "is composed of groups of men and women who believe in the social code of McGuffey." Blue cloth binding with gold front cover art and spine lettering. Binding has been professionally rebacked, saving the cloth and artwork of the original front cover, but with a new spine and back cover, and with new endpapers. Original cloth and gilding of front cover are a little scuffed. Page block edges are a little darkened with age, and there are occasional spots of foxing and very minor finger smudges on the text pages. Book is square, tightly bound, and clean. Copyright date 1858. The striking black-and-white illustrations are by a variety of artists. A series of short stories for children, including a long story about a happy slaveholding household in the Ante-bellum South. 171 + 2 catalogs.
