1 Kelley, William; Phillips, Wendel; Douglass, Frederick; Wright, Elizur; Height, William Equality of All Men Before the Law Claimed and Defended in Speeches by Hon. William D. Kelley, Wendell Phillips, and Frederick Douglass, and Letters from Elizur Wright and Wm. Heighton
Boston Geo. C. Rand and Avery, 1965 First Edition Soft Cover Fair
8vo, 44 pp, in original sewn wrappers. A scarce abolitionist pamphlet in which the writers begin to address issues of Reconstruction, especially the question of black suffrage. Includes what we believe is the first appearance of Frederick Douglass’s speech “What the Black Man Wants,” delivered to the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society days before the end of the Civil War, in which he advocates the “immediate, unconditional, and universal enfranchisement of the black man in every state in the Union.” Wraps are heavily soiled and much of the front wrap is missing. Sewn binding still secure, pages somewhat soiled, but all text present and unmarked. Sabin 22713, Blockson 2779.
