Laid in are a printed Christmas card from 1923, and with a later card, dated 1950, written by just Earnest Elmo Calkins, indicating that his lovely wife had passed away in 1949. Lovely frontis portrait of her, protected by tissue guard. Loose book-plate laid in, too. Hand-sewn paper. Overall, gift-quality condition, sterling examples of letter-pressed collectibles. Another, much smaller chip is peeling away from the label of the title on spine. Top-stained along all three edges, text-block generally clean and reasonably bright, given its age, though text-block is wavy with age. This is an incomplete set of three of the volumes from a multi-volume work, attractive, with soft-brown boards in very good condition. Text is remarkably clear, and there is no highlighting or underlining anyway. Spines are worn and rubbed. First volume has a tissue guard opposite the frontispiece, an arresting likeness of Hoffmann. Published probably around 1900, the first volume is preceded by a lengthy introduction by Schweizer, and then a facsimile reprint of a letter from Hoffmann from 1816 opens this first volume.
